Sinclair Will Sell 23 Stations In 18 Markets.
Aiming to appease regulators and accelerate the closing of its $3.9 purchase of Tribune Media, Sinclair Broadcast Group says it will sell 23 TV stations in 18 markets to six different buyers. The spinoffs add seven new markets to the original 11 the company had earmarked for sale back in February.
Tribune Media CEO Peter Kern said Sinclair’s latest move was intended to “pave the way for regulatory approval” of the blockbuster deal.
The buyers include Cunningham Broadcasting, Standard Media Group, Howard Stirk Holdings, Meredith Corp, a company affiliated with the CEO of Maryland-based Atlantic Automotive Corp. and a sixth party that hasn’t been announced.
“After a very robust divestiture process, with strong interest from many parties, we have achieved healthy multiples on the stations we are divesting,” Sinclair president and CEO Chris Ripley said in a statement. “While we continue to believe that we had a strong and supportable r

Classic Hits Reach New Ratings Peaks.
Christmas brings AC radio a huge cume infusion – the tricky part is trying to retain some of that ratings rocket boost, while luring back listeners that found a new favorite station when the Yule music was playing 24/7. Based on a new analysis of first quarter listening data, AC programmers have cracked the ratings code, delivering the format’s best numbers in seven years.
The usual scenario sees AC fall back to earth after the Holiday book ends and the influx of new listeners tails off. “This year has been different, however, with AC surging to one of its best starts to the year (post-holiday) that we have seen in PPM measurement, particularly with Millennial audiences,” Nielsen says in a new analysis released Wednesday. In fact, in the PPM markets, AC posted its highest first quarter share of 18-34 year-olds in any year since Nielsen began tracking national format trends in 2011.
AC cracked an 8.0 share among Millennials for the first time,

Big changes at SABC Radio, they are re-shuffle-ling presenters
South Africa’s public broadcaster, the SABC, has announced several exciting changes to presenter line-ups on its radio stations, underscoring the need to stay relevant and stay tuned to listeners’ needs.
But the process isn’t without a great big elephant in the room: The Sakina Kamwendo situation. Kamwendo abruptly disappeared off air midway through her Forum at 8 show on Friday morning, replaced by music for the remainder of her allotted time. Rumours pointed to the show’s producers being told to take her off the air. Social media went crazy, with fans demanding answers.
Good Hope FM mixes it up, big time
There’s a new breakfast show host on Good Hope FM, and he’s the youngest since the legendary Mark Gillman shook up the station back in 1995. He’s 24-year-old Dan Corder, who started his radio career at UCT Radio, and he’s the youngest breakfast show presenter in the country. “We know Dan is a great fit for ou

Last Push For Radio To Move To Online Public Files.
The countdown is on for all full-power radio stations to move their public inspection files online. The Federal Communications Commission has ordered all stations to shift to an online file on the FCC’s searchable portal website by March 1. It’s the last wave of stations to make the switch. Television stations began posting their public files online in 2012 and radio stations in the top 50 markets followed in 2016.
For the final group converting over to the FCC’s web portal, the largest headache has been technical. “The single biggest question that we are getting isn’t what do I upload or anything along the traditional lines, it’s I can’t get the system to work—and as a result people can’t get even started in the process and it’s been incredibly frustrating,” said Fletcher Heald & Hildreth attorney Scott Flick on a recent webinar hosted by several state broadcast associations. It’s a good reason for stations not to put off the process until the last minute.

Traffic a major driver in powering drive time radio
The latest BRC Radio Audience Measurement (RAM) numbers, which were for the first full year of research, continue to reflect longer listening times and a listening curve that no longer has sharp peaks that stand out during the drive time periods. But this does not mean that drive time radio is any less important. MICHAEL..
